More about this class
In the northernmost corner of Italy, bordering Austria and Slovenia, are the regions of Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. With a strong Austro-Germanic influence, the wines of these regions are often made from grapes of those countries along with local grapes unique to the region.
Whites from Alto Adige – whether it be top quality Pinot Grigio (different from the mass brands), German whites like Riesling or Sylvaner, or Kerner, the outstanding Riesling x Trollinger hybrid – tend to be full of acidity yet full fruit flavor from warm days and cool nights. The reds of region – Schiava and Lagrein are originals – full of color, flavor and acidity.
Whites are the star of the high quality Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, where local grapes Friulano, Malvasia Istriana, and Ribolla Gialla grow alongside French whites like Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Reds from the region tend to be French in origin, with the exception of high-quality local grapes like Refosco dal Peduncolo and Schioppettino, which are tannic, herbal, spicy and unique.
In this class we will explore these two high-quality regions and discover what makes them so unique in the world of Italian wine. To get a sense of these places and discuss what to look for when seeking out these unusually good wines, we’ll taste (specific wine list with details comes when you sign up!):
- From Alto Adige: Kerner, Pinot Grigio, and Lagrien
- From Friuli: Ribolla Gialla and Schioppettino
