Known as Syrah or Shiraz, this beautiful grape is underestimated. When from its homeland of the Northern Rhône the wine is like black pepper, minerals, smoke, herbs with lavender, olive, bacon and shrubby underbrush with lovely acidity and firm tannin. When from certain areas of Australia, it is creamy, plush and like chocolate, blackcurrant, blueberry, baking spice, and leather. Styles from California range depending on the climate in which the grape grows. In this class we’ll taste versions from:

  • The Rhône Valley, its native home
  • Australia, where it’s better known as Shiraz
  • South Africa, where it’s earthy, spicy, and fruity
  • Washington State, where it’s fruity, leathery and bold
  • And as an optional wine: Chilean Syrah, where the grape is emerging as a star player in cooler regions

We’ll talk about the differences between the styles and you’ll have the opportunity to taste the breadth of this delicious, underrated grape. I have to admit, it’s probably my favorite red. Let’s hope that after this class it will be yours too!
